The National Trust Group

Monday November 14th saw the National Trust Group at Woolsthorpe Manor for the last outing of 2016.

The Manor is in fact an old farm house, the home of Isaac Newton’s family for several generations. He lived there during his childhood and then in London returning during the plague years and having most of his brilliant inventions in that period. It was very interesting and certainly educational. We all enjoyed a visit afterwards at the Belton House garden centre for lunch and a little retail therapy! All looking forward to starting again in March 2017.

NOVEMBER-THURSFORD CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR NORFOLK

ALL SUBJECT TO CHANGE

The Bakery Group.

The theme for this month was Christmas Treats. All group members were asked to bring along something that could be served at Christmas either for a meal or a buffet.  Alan provided a bottle of champagne as he celebrates his 80th birthday this month. A good afternoon was had by all.

The group shared recipes and ideas and as usual we asked advice from others and discussed how the dish could be improved or adapted to suit our own tastes. As you can see on the photo we had a very varied selection on offer and not a mince pie to be found!

We were given plenty “food for thought” to plan for our Christmas celebrations. We will not be meeting in December. The next meeting will be on Monday 23rd January at 2.15 when we meet at Alan’s and he will demonstrate baked risotto.

If you are interested in joining the group and would like more information, please see me at the meeting.

Book Group
Our book this month was ‘Catching the Sun’ by Tony Parsons, a story about the Finn family who went in search of paradise to Phuket, Thailand after Tom Finns business failed in London. This turned out to be a voyage of self-discovery for everyone when Tom is almost jailed for being employed by an investment company operating outside Thai law. The family survive a tsunami and help various people who are left with nothing. They learn about the darker side of life in Thailand too, experiencing its arcane local customs and corruption and finding that life in this country does not  always live up to the descriptions in the travel brochures.
The family finally decide to return to London but are all enriched by their knowledge gained whilst residing in Thailand. A simple story which portrays life and emotions as they are felt by most people

National Trust Visits
The National Trust Group had another enjoyable day out in Warwickshire at Charlecote Park. It is the home of the Lucy family after 400 years. It is a beautiful brick house. It has extensive gardens and a grand deer park with cattle and deer roaming freely beside the River Avon. Volunteers shared their knowledge to inform us about the history of the house
Stoneywell in Leicestershire was originally built in 1899 as a thatched cottage, but following a fire, the roof was replaced with local slate. The owner, Ernest Gimson, was a keen follower of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the cottage was built in that style. Craftsmen were employed to create the beautiful furniture, which apart from the health and safety aspect would grace any home today. Our visit was enhanced by the guide whose family originated from Rainworth!
The group moved on to the next National Trust site, Staunton Harold Church, some twenty minutes away. The interior of the chapel of the Holy Trinity features superb panelling, oak box pews and painted ceilings depicting the Creation. A fascinating day out.

National Trust Visit To Stratford

Thanks again to Diana for arranging such a wonderful day for our visit. Stratford is a quaint but compact town and so we managed to see most of the "must see" houses and of course the Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare and his family are buried. Some of the group enjoyed a short cruise on the River Avon while others walked along the river bank in the glorious sunshine. The perfect ending to a perfect day was tea and cakes for some and ice cream for others! Can't wait for our next outing to York.

   Garden Visits Interest Group

In August the Garden Visit Group went round a NGS garden at East Markham. NGS gardens are private gardens open to the public on certain days in aid of charity. Oak Barn is a small rural garden full of lush palms, ferns, cannas, dahlias and is full of life in the summer. We enjoyed a private showing with refreshments in warm sunshine

Book group

The Book Groups latest read was ‘Where Memories Go’ by Sally Magnusson. This was a very thought provoking read by an obviously loving daughter about her mother’s deterioration into Alzheimer. An extremely well written piece about a heart breaking situation that could happen to anyone .It was a very good choice as we may not have chosen it ourselves. It was quite a learning curve
